Q: What is the difference between disinfecting, sanitizing, & cleaning?

A: Many people use the words “disinfecting,” “sanitizing,” and “cleaning” interchangeably, but they are quite different. A disinfectant kills nearly all germs within ten minutes of application. The germs we are talking about here are viruses (such as Cold and Flu), bacteria (like Salmonella, E. coli, Staph, &Strep), and Fungi ( such as Mold & Mildew). A sanitizer kills mainly bacteria within 30 seconds and may kill other germs as well, thereby leaving a surface relatively safe for contact. A cleaner mainly removes visible dirt and may not kill germs. Be sure to read the label carefully on your household surface care products so you understand the benefits, directions, and risks.
